UMR To Offer New Option For Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Degree

August 12, 2016

Starting in Fall 2017, the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) will be offering a Nursing Guarantee Option for students interested in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through the University of Minnesota.

Students admitted to the program will complete their first year of courses at UMR in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program, which will provide first year prerequisite courses that are required for students entering the BSN program. Years two through four of the BSN program, nursing students will be enrolled in the School of Nursing at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, located on the UMR campus.

"We are pleased to enter into this new level of collaboration with UMR," said Connie White Delaney, Dean of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. "Employers are seeking, and the nation is calling for, more nurses with four-year degrees who have excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills. This new option gives qualified high school students in the region who seek a nursing career  an option to complete this program in Rochester."

All student practicum requirements for this program will be conducted at Mayo Clinic.

"We are thrilled to expand our longstanding, highly-valued relationship with the UMTC College of Nursing," said UMR Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Student Development Lori Carrell. "This new academic endeavor is just the kind of innovation UMR seeks to provide – it’s collaboratively designed to enhance student learning and to assist with the incredible workforce demand in our region. We look forward to welcoming an outstanding first cohort into this program in the fall of 2017."

This Rochester-located nursing program is competitive and capacity will be limited. High school students can apply to this program now for the fall 2017 entry term by visiting r.umn.edu/apply. When completing the application, students need to choose Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences as their major and then select the UMR Nursing Guarantee Option box.
