The University of Minnesota Rochester Biomedical Informatics and Computational Biology (BICB) Program will be holding a Research Symposium on Friday, January 14, 2011 in Rochester, MN. The purpose of this event is to bring together teams of scientists, administrators, and students from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMTC), the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR), the Hormel Institute, the Mayo Clinic, and IBM, as well as other researchers working in the field of biomedical informatics and computational biology. The scope of this event is to facilitate further collaborations in the area of biomedical informatics and computational biology.
The morning session of the BICB Research Symposium will cover a brief update of the BICB Program. The keynote presentations will be given by Mayo Clinic doctor, Frank Prendergast, M.D., Ph.D., "Cancer: Bioinformatics and the "N" of One Problem", and Henning Schroeder, Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, "US Graduate Education in a Globalized Academic Marketplace". Following the keynotes will be a presentation by Carlos Sosa, Ph.D., from IBM, "Facilitating Interdisciplinary Collaboration Between Academia and Commercial Institutions".
Over the noon hour, lunch will be provided and participants will be given the opportunity to review displays provided by institutions/centers that are involved in BICB related activities.
The afternoon session will feature a panel discussion focusing on "Career Planning in Technical Fields" as well as scientific presentations from two BICB graduate students, Loren Gragert, "Genetic Ancestry and HLA Matching in Bone Marrow Registries" and Dimitrije Jevremovic, "Computation and Analysis of Metabolic Pathways."
