Rebecca Laborde’s graduate training focused on molecular aspects of the host/pathogen relationship of the protozoan parasite Leishmania chagasi, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis. Her postdoctoral training has focused on the application of Massively Parallel Sequencing technologies, also called NextGen Sequencing, to study the clinical characteristics of head and neck cancers. Having completed her postdoctoral research with the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, she has now moved to the Department of Hematology at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Laborde is responsible for teaching Microbiology, Microbiology Laboratory and Microbiology and Environmental Topics. These courses aim to provide students with a basic understanding of microorganisms and their role in human health and disease, the environment and important interactions with our everyday lives. She has a strong commitment to exploring issues related to global health and disease, stemming from her graduate research experiences, which she incorporates into the microbiology courses she teaches.
