Information for High School Counselors

As a high school counselor, you play a critical role in guiding college-bound students through the often confusing and stressful college admissions process. This site is dedicated to helping you in that role and providing you with the most up-to-date admissions information for UMR.

UMR’s Health Science programs take an innovative approach to an education in the quickly growing field of health care. Using an integrated curriculum that is embedded with career exploration and relevant health examples, students will be prepared for a wide variety of career options revolving around the health sciences. These options include professional careers in health care, graduate studies in professional health programs, accelerated graduate studies programs, and careers in the bioscience industry.

Who is a fit for UMR?

UMR welcomes students with a strong interest in the health science field who are dedicated and willing to work hard. Our students appreciate our community integrated campus, apartment-style living, and downtown urban atmosphere, where they are truly part of the Rochester community. They also thrive in small class sizes with a lot of individual interaction with professors and colleagues, and are open to support from student-based faculty and student success coaches.

Who may not be the best fit?

A student who is completely unsure of his or her future career path or interest area who is uninterested in the health sciences.

Required Classes for Students Entering Fall 2012:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of Mathematics (a 4th year is highly recommended)
  • 3 years of Science (Including at least one year biological and physical sciences including laboratory experience; a 4th year of science is highly recommended)
  • 3 years of Social Science (including US History)
  • 2 years of a single second language (Spanish recommended)

Application Requirements

  • BSHS Application
  • $35 Application Fee ($30 for online applications), or Fee Waiver
  • Application Essay: Complete a typed essay (approximately 300 to 500 words) addressing one of the options listed below.
    1. Describe a person or experience that influenced your decision to pursue an education in health sciences.
    2. Describe the qualities you possess that will help you be successful as a student and a professional in the field of health sciences.
  • Secondary School Report
  • Official copy of student’s high school transcript.
  • Official score report with student’s ACT and/or SAT scores. This can also be provided on the official high school transcript.
  • Optional: Teacher Evaluation and/or letter of recommendation (recommended)
