Am I an international student?
An international student is defined as any student who is not a permanent resident of the United States. Even if you attended secondary school outside the U.S. you are not considered international if you have U.S. citizenship.
Does UMR offer financial aid to international students?
No. International students are not eligible for financial aid from the University of Minnesota Rochester.
What are the costs of attending UMR?
Tuition, fees, room and board for international students are the same as a U.S. student.

What type of housing is available?
The University of Minnesota Rochester is located in the heart of downtown Rochester and is integrated into the community. Students have the option to choose UMR apartment housing, located within walking distance of campus and offering the amenities that are important to college students. Living in University housing also allows students to connect with one another socially and academically. For more information, visit the housing website.

What is the UMR application deadline?
UMR employs a rolling admission process and will review all materials once they have been received; UMR's priority application date is December 15. Obtaining a student F-1 visa in some countries can take up to six months, in other countries a visa can be obtained immediately. International student applicants should plan accordingly.
How and when do I receive the I-20?
International students will receive the I-20 after they have been offered admission to UMR and completed the International Student Enrollment Confirmation form. This form will be emailed to the student when they are offered admission.
When is International Student Orientation?
Orientation will occur the week before the beginning of fall term; usually the first week of September.
How and when do I register for classes?
International students register for classes during orientation.
Is there public transportation available?
Rochester has an extensive public bus service as well as scheduled bus service to Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Are employment opportunities available for international students?
International students are eligible for on-campus employment; international students may not work off-campus.
What should I do after I am admitted to UMR?
1. Fill out the International Student Enrollment Confirmation Form emailed when admission is offered. After the form is complete and emailed back, the I-20 and official offer of admission will be mailed to the address provided on the International Student Enrollment Confirmation Form.
2. After the I-20 is received, the student should begin the visa application process in their home country. For a guide to this process, view Steps for Applying for the F-1 Visa.
3. When the visa is obtained, students should purchase airfare and make arrangements for living and studying in Rochester. Students will need to arrive in time to participate in orientation on September 2. Students can arrive directly to Rochester International Airport (RST) or to Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Students who arrive at MSP can take a two hour shuttle to Rochester; visit this link to learn about transportation to Rochester.
