No matter what institution you are coming from or looking to transfer to, planning ahead is key. Due to our unique, integrated curriculum, planning ahead is even more important at UMR. Please contact us early in your planning process.
It is in your best interest to work closely with UMR staff to ensure you transfer in as many direct equivalent courses as possible. Direct equivalents are those courses UMR faculty have evaluated as having nearly the same content as UMR courses and therefore will count as if you had taken the UMR course. For example if you had taken Psychology 101 at Snowy Plains Community College and the UMR faculty have determined it is a direct equivalent of UMR PSY 1511-Introduction to Psychology, you would receive credit for PSY 1511 at UMR. Other courses may fulfill liberal education requirements and some may transfer as elective credit.
To simplify the transfer process, the University of Minnesota, Minnesota state universities, and Minnesota community colleges have developed a Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC). If a student completes the MnTC at a participating school and then transfers to the University of Minnesota Rochester, the student will have completed a majority of the core and theme of the University’s liberal education. If a student earns an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree at a Minnesota community college or community and technical college, the student is considered to have completed a major portion of the liberal education requirements. This does not mean a student has completed a majority of direct equivalent transfer credits.
Regardless of the number of PSEO/CIS credits, students who plan to enroll the Fall Semester immediately after their high school graduation will be considered incoming first-year/freshmen students. All previous college coursework will be evaluated and credit will be awarded accordingly.
High school students may earn college credit through Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. UMR has established which scores warrant college credit. Charts for AP, IB, and CLEP awards can be found here.
Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (colleges) you have attended or are currently attending.
Official high school transcript. All applicants must turn in a high school transcript. The high school transcript (or GED) is needed to determine: proof of graduation; and whether you completed the high school preparation requirements. Exception: students who have previously completed an Associate of Arts degree or bachelor's degree do not need to submit a high school transcript.
