Student Facilitator of InSciEd Out

Work Schedule

Program Description

These positions are within the Integrated Science Education Outreach (InSciEd Out) program held in partnership with the Mayo Clinic Center of Translational Science Activities (CTSA) Education Resources.  This program includes outreach to Rochester area schools and coordination of resources necessary for science education curriculum developed within the partnership.  These resources include the time/expertise of scientists and education researches as well as technology (microscopes, computers, lab equipment), scheduling data and document management.

Experience/Education Requirements

Applicants should have performed well in first year undergraduate scientific coursework.  Additional coursework or experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, or genetics will significantly bolster the application. Additionally, experience in education including tutoring, teaching, or mentoring of K-12 students will be highly favored in the application process.  Some of the positions will require experience in managing complex calendar scheduling systems, an electronic management system, database management or equipment management, maintenance and utilization.

Job Duties

The four positions will share the responsibilities of a student facilitator of InSciEd Out.

  • Schedule Management: - Coordination of the various student, parent, and scientist volunteers who will serve the implantation of InSciEd Out curriculum in area school:  This will include regular phone and email contact with volunteers as well as on-site (at school) coordination of volunteers when necessary.  This role requires skills in complex calendar scheduling at multiple sites.
  • Document Management-Metrics facilitation for science education research:  the individual(s) in this position will manage the coordination and collection of teacher and student surveys, collection and duplication of student classroom work, as well as the management of legal documents and waivers with regard to study participation.  This position requires skills in document management in an electronic secured environment.
  • Data Management-Data collection for community science research:  Our program operates under the guiding hypothesis that high quality science education will result in improved health outcomes within our community. This work generates data at all participating sites.  This position includes the coordination and management of data resulting from this work potentially utilizing relational database.
  • Resource Management: the individual(s) in this position will facilitate the checkout and delivery of the technology/included in our collection for school loans.  This includes microscopes, computers, laboratory supplies, etc.
  • Zebrafish Resource Management: the individual(s) in this position will be trained in zebrafish husbandry and will maintain zebrafish lines necessary for ongoing support of InSciEd Out curriculum.
