Youth Recreation Staff

Hours

2 – 6:30 pm, M – F and 9:00 am – 3:30 pm every other Saturday.  Hours and days of the week are flexible according to the needs of the youth and Student’s schedule

Program Description

The Youth Rec After School Program provides integrated and adaptive recreation programming for youth with disabilities from the age of 2 to 21.  The daily activities of this program are designed to integrate and connect youth in the program with other youth in the community.  The program is based out of the Rochester Family YMCA and includes a variety of activities in the community.  We provide transportation to and from the program as well as to various activities.  Staff must have a valid driver’s license, insurance and a car.  Staff must also pass a background check prior to hire.

Experience/Education Requirements:

High school diploma and a strong desire to work with children and youth with a disability.  Must be able to physically participate in activities like basketball, swimming, etc.  Examples of activities: bowling, swimming, community education classes, public library, Park and Rec classes, RideAbility (therapeutic horseback riding), crafts, basketball and other sports, J>E>T>S> Gymnastics classes, etc.

Job Duties/Expectation of Youth Rec Staff:
  • Staff will assist either 1 child with disabilities or a small group of children with disabilities (depending on the level of needs) to participate in community leisure activities in a variety of community locations.
  • Staff will actively assist the youth in the program to build relationships with other youth both in and outside of the program.
  • Staff will provide youth with needed personal care (assisting with eating, changing, using the restroom, etc).
  • Staff will enforce the rules and procedures of the community recreation facility that we are attending.
  • Staff will communicate future event plans, issues and solution ideas to the youth, their parents, and other supports.
  • Staff are to be creative in helping youth to plan activities and explore the community.
  • Staff are to be patient, kind and maintain a cheerful disposition while working productively and positively with others.
  • Staff will transport youth to and from the program and activities during the program using personal or agency vehicle.
  • Staff are to be enthusiastic and enjoy working with children with a variety of developmental disabilities.
