Program Description

Experience/Education requirements

The position in general requires excellent communication skills, excellent relationship building skills, the ability to model the YMCA Core Values, and have the ability and desire to make a personal connection with the communities the YMCA serves.  Specifically, this position requires an aquatic background including current certification in YMCA Lifeguard or Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid. Lifeguards must be knowledgeable of all rules and regulations related to the use of aquatic facilities. Dependability and promptness are necessary, as well as the ability to present a mature and personable image.

Job Duties
  • See it, own it! Take responsibility for correcting the problems you see and cleaning things that need to be cleaned.
  • Meet and greet all volunteers, staff, members, program participants, etc. every day with a smile and hello.
  • Lend a hand! Offer to help others whenever possible. Unless it requires training you don't have, it's never, "not my job."
  • Give Thanks! Offer thanks to others when you see them lend a hand to others and look for ways to compliment and give praise when it is deserved.
  • Guarantee the safety and well-being of aquatic participants through preventative Lifeguarding, using 10/10 scanning techniques, being alert and aware of potential danger areas.
  • Enforce prescribed safety procedures and rules of good behavior and courtesy to ensure a safe, consistent, and pleasant pool environment for all participants.
  • Maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance while on duty, be properly attired and rescue ready while guarding at all times at any aquatic facility.
  • Complete and maintain accurate records as necessary, including pool attendance, incident reports, and chemical readings.
  • Keep pool area neat by keeping pool equipment out of the path of traffic and immediately report to maintenance any unclean or hazardous area.
  • Be knowledgeable about the pool or waterfront - depth, dimensions, scheduling, temperatures, etc., - by reviewing pool notations, pool reports, and pool schedules when coming on duty.
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Keep an accurate and honest time-card.
  • Maintain required certifications.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Lifeguard supervisor.
  • Enforce prescribed safety procedures and rules of good behavior and courtesy to ensure a safe, consistent, and pleasant pool environment for all participants.
