Program Description

Experience/Education Requirements

The position in general requires excellent communication skills, excellent relationship building skills, the ability to model the YMCA Core Values and the ability and desire to make a personal connection with the communities the YMCA serves.  Specifically, this position requires an aquatic background with knowledge and ability to demonstrate sequence and asses swim skills for a class or an individual student, as well as the ability to motivate and communicate with children of all ages and abilities in a developmentally appropriate manner. Current certification in YMCA Swim Lesson Program and Life guarding or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training is preferred but not required.

Job Duties
  • See it, own it! Take responsibility for correcting the problems you see and cleaning things that need to be cleaned.
  • Meet and greet all volunteers, staff, members, program participants, etc. every day with a smile and hello.
  • Lend a hand! Offer to help others whenever possible. Unless it requires training you don't have, it's never, "not my job."
  • Give Thanks! Offer thanks to others when you see them lend a hand to others and look for ways to compliment and give praise when it is deserved.
  • Ensure the safety of all assigned swim lesson students. Teach, review and enforce pool/class rules, and report any unsafe conditions to the lifeguard on duty and or the Head Lifeguard or Head Swim Instructor. Keep all students in sight at all times, and stay close enough to assist as needed.
  • Proactively communicate with students and parents about their progress throughout each session. Follow up with each person that has a concern or question in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct all swim classes in accordance with the provided YMCA Swim Lesson Program Curriculum. Incorporate YMCA Character Development, cooperation, and diversity appreciation values into all swim lesson activities.
  • Ensure class continuity and teach any level of swim lessons at any time, parent/child through adult. Be able to communicate, motivate, and evaluate students of all ages and swim levels.
  • Enter the water before students begin to swim. Demonstrate proper skills in the water during class. Swim instructors are not permitted to sit while teaching.
  • Recognize individual differences and adjust teaching strategies as needed for the success of all students in the class. Use appropriate drills and positive reinforcement to help students improve skills, gain confidence, and enjoy their time in the water.
  • Maximize swimmer participation every class period and utilize allotted class time.
  • Maintain skills/roster sheets showing students' progress on a daily basis. Prepare and distribute student progress reports and turn in paperwork at the end of the session.
  • Maintain a neat pool deck and assist with equipment set up and tear down.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
