The Reading Center has been helping students who struggle to learn the skill of reading (known as dyslexia) for 60 years. We provide specialized reading instruction, assessments, summer school, Study Skills and Writing Classes. Our Training Institutes teach adults in the Orton-Gillingham approach and are accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practioners and Educators. The Reading Center provides outreach education in order to educate parents and teachers about he signs and symptoms of reading difficulties, and the methods that are proven to help.
The successful applicant will be a college student with a High School diploma. This individual will be comfortable working with youth of all ages, from 4 and 5 year olds in the Reading Clubs, to High School students taking Study Skills Assessment. They will also be able to talk with parents and put them at ease. The applicant also needs to demonstrate intellectual curiosity and persistence in order to assist with the research project. An ability to use internet resources and computer is required.
The Reading Assistant will help train Reading Center staff in a variety of Reading Center program areas. The Reading Center Assistant will assist the Director of Readiness to assess pre-K students’ skills and assist in assessments and Annual Reading Skills Assessments on two Saturdays for each month (in October, January, and March). This position will assist in research with 60 years of clients’ files. This position will also assist with the logistics of the Reading Center’s 60th Anniversary celebration in November, 2011, as well as assist in community outreach opportunities.
