Registration Checklist

Review your APAS report

Use the APAS Quick Link on the right to get an individualized report on what courses you still need for each of your major and/or minor degree programs.

Meet with your adviser each semester

Your student success coach can help you stay on track for graduation. If you are an undergraduate, you need to register for 15 credits per semester to stay on track for graduation. If you are accepted into a degree program, you pay a flat tuition rate based on a minimum of 13-credits and also pay the student services fee and a full technology fee. For more information on credit loads. If you register for fewer than 13 credits, any credits you take are assessed at a per-credit rate only if you have been approved for a reduced credit load. Go to the 13-credit policy for details and form to complete for approval. All undergraduates must also maintain a minimum 13-credit load to qualify for an earlier date in the registration rotation.

Follow CCE registration requirements

If you plan to take day, evening, and Online and Distance Learning (ODL) classes from the College of Continuing Education (CCE), you will find them included in the Class Schedule. ODL courses are listed at the bottom of Class Schedule Web pages or on the ODL Web site. You can register at the same time for all classes. See the non-degree students page if you are not admitted into a degree program at the University.

Submit hospitalization insurance information

If you take 6 or more credits, you must provide all health insurance information requested when you register or online at the One Stop Hospitalization insurance Quick Link or on the the Student Hospitalization Insurance form. Otherwise, you will be automatically charged for University-sponsored hospitalization insurance The deadline for providing insurance information is Monday, September 21, for fall 2009.

Know your class standing (academic level)

You should register for classes that are appropriate to your class standing (academic level). You class standing is determined by the number of course credits you have successfully completed in a postsecondary institution, including the University of Minnesota. Quarter transfer credits from another institution are converted to semester credits by a standard formula.

Be aware of requirements for non-degree and/or first-time registration

If this is your first term at the University and you have not been admitted to a degree program (typically this applies to non-degree students in the College of Continuing Education), you must either register in person at the One Stop Student Services center on campus by mail or fax.

Add name to waitlist for closed classes

Check the section status tab in the Class Schedule to make sure that the class you want is still open. Some classes fill quickly. You may add your name to a waitlist, if one is available.

Apply to receive graduate credit

To receive graduate credit for courses taken while not admitted to a graduate program, you must get approval from the department offering the class by completing the Registration Request for Graduate Credit form. In some instances, college approval may be required. See the Graduate non-degree page for more information. Note: These classes do not qualify for financial aid.

Get a class permission number

Is instructor approval, department approval or college approval printed in the prerequisite statement of your class? After the first week of classes? Remember: You must have a class permission number or online course approval to register for these courses. All class permission numbers expire at the end of the second week of the semester (September 21 for fall 2009)—after the second week, you must go to your college office for electronic approval.

Get approval for class time conflicts

You cannot register for classes that overlap or have less that one (1) minute separation without submitting a Class Time Conflict Approval form signed by the instructors of both courses.

Clear holds on your student record

You will not be able to register if you have any holds on your student record. Notice of any hold, including the name of the department or office where it may be cleared, is available here. Clear your holds as soon as possible. More information about holds.

Review college registration instructions

You have specific registration requirements to follow or meet if you are a student in the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Education and Human Development, the Carlson School of Management, the Graduate School and/or an international student.
