Dr. Lori Carrell has been named chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR). Carrell’s appointment is effective February 12, 2018, pending approval by the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents, which meets on Friday, February 9.

“I am confident that Dr. Carrell will provide strong leadership for UMR,” said President Eric Kaler. “She will be a tireless advocate for UMR in our University of Minnesota System, and she will continue to build on UMR’s relationship with the dynamic Rochester community.”

Carrell has served as UMR’s Interim Chancellor since August 2017. Since 2014, she has served as UMR’s Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Student Development. A passionate and creative educator, Carrell focuses on innovation, communication and well-being in higher education communities.

She has been deeply involved in UMR’s strategic fiscal, facilities and enrollment planning; its integrative planning in the downtown Rochester community; growing UMR’s Living Learning Communities; and she has been instrumental in developing the Higher Education Innovation Summit planned for this coming June in Rochester.

“I’m delighted and honored to serve this innovative campus community,” Carrell said. “UMR’s legacy of collaboration and creativity will continue – carrying us onward toward our vision.”

Prior to UMR, Carrell worked at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she played a key leadership role in directing both the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, a research-based faculty development endeavor, and the University Studies Program, where she facilitated and implemented large-scale, nationally-acclaimed, curricular reform.

Carrell received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Anderson University in Indiana in 1984, majoring in Speech Communication, Education and Psychology. She went on to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage, where she received her Master's degree in Counseling Psychology/Education in 1989. She earned her Ph.D. in Speech Communication from the University of Denver in 1991. Carrell then began her 23 years of service at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh before she joined the UMR community in August 2014.
