“My interest in languages and linguistics began as a junior Spanish major at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. What was to be a 9-month study abroad experience at the University of Barcelona turned into 4 years living, working, and studying in Barcelona.”
Ryan Furness’ interest in languages and linguistics began as a junior Spanish major at the U of MN – TC. What was to be a 9-month study abroad experience at the University of Barcelona turned into 4 years living, working, and studying in Barcelona. After finally returning to the U of M to complete his B.A., Ryan spent a year at the China University of Technology in Xuzhou, China where he taught English Linguistics. He then returned to the U of M to begin his graduate work in Hispanic Linguistics. Ryan returned to Catalonia in 2002 to continue his graduate work at the University of Barcelona and also to begin work on the first Aranese (Occitan)-English dictionary. He spent 18 months living and working between Barcelona and the Aran Valley (Pyrenees mountains) before returning to Minnesota to finish his Master’s in Hispanic Linguistics.
Prior to arriving at UMR, Ryan worked as a Spanish instructor at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where he taught a range of courses in Beginning and Intermediate Spanish, as well as Spanish literature and culture classes. After his experience at St. Olaf, Ryan spent time as the Director of the Language Learning Center at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN where he oversaw the College’s Mac-based computer center for the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures which had a staff of 16 student workers.
At UMR, Ryan teaches Spanish courses, drawing upon his extensive work and study-abroad experiences to create a unique and cutting-edge program for learning Spanish within the context of the health sciences.
Ryan’s research has spanned the spectrum of linguistics. He has done work in lexicography, sociolinguistics including gender studies and language contact phenomena, language learning and second-language acquisition, and most recently the use of technology in the language classroom.
