1st Annual BICB Industry Symposium

1st Annual BICB Industry Symposium

May 21, 2013 | 9:30 AM - 4:15 PM
University of Minnesota (East Bank) | Walter Library Digital Technology Center

The BICB program at the University of Minnesota Rochester is announcing the first annual Bioinformatics Industry Symposium to be held on May 21, 2013 in the Walter Library Digital Technology Center on the East Bank of the University Minnesota.

As a complement to the long-standing BICB Research Symposium, the BICB Industry Symposium will focus on the use of bioinformatics toward marketplace application. Plenary and poster presentations will include topics on individualized medicine, major disease characterization, genetic engineering of crops and livestock, and strategic applications of bioinformatics to “big data” challenges in medical technology and agricultural sciences. The symposium will also offer after break out sessions in four key areas: diagnostics and biomarker identification for cancer and heart disease, brain wave characterization and biomarker discovery for brain disease, genetic engineering of crops and livestock, and bioinformatics as a strategic investment for the medical and agribusiness technology industries.

The goals of this Symposium are to provide background on the nature and application of bioinformatics and to provide a forum for discussion and networking on potential future collaboration opportunities between BICB and industry.

The BICB program began in 2007 as an inter-disciplinary research program administered out of the University of Minnesota Rochester. The BICB graduate program began in 2008. It currently has 57 graduate students (20 PhD and 37 MS students) and over 50 faculty members spread across the University’s Twin Cities and Rochester campuses, as well as its partners the Brain Sciences Center, Cray Inc., The Hormel Institute, IBM, Mayo Clinic, and National Marrow Donor Program.
