Meet Melody Yang - Alumni Spotlight

Melody Yang ’21

Area of Focus: Pre-Med & Patient Care

Melody Yang ‘21 tailored her experiences while at UMR to learn more about people, their complexities and intersectionalities to improve the skills needed to care for patients. 

This approach included taking courses in health literacy and health policy, participating in bioengineering and chemotherapy research at Mayo Clinic to learn more about the innovative technology used to treat cancer as well as expressing creativity and learning to channel difficult emotions through poetry and art. Yang shared that these experiences allowed her to apply what she had learned while participating as a Mental Health Advocate with UMR’s student services and through the mental health research she conducted.

Through her experiences at UMR, Yang shared that she not only learned about others but also about her own values and biases. “I was fortunate to gain introspective skills that have been greatly applied as I continue my education.” Yang is in her first year as an optometry student at Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Optometry.
