Student Group Registration

Interested in Starting a Student Group at UMR?

Student group registration is reviewed and managed by the Office of Student Activities. New student group registration typically opens at the beginning of each academic year and all groups must re-register annually to remain active.

Why Register a Student Group?

Registered student groups can host activities, reserve campus spaces and connect with resources that support involvement and leadership development. By starting a group on campus, students can bring peers together around shared interests, goals and help strengthen the UMR community.

Student Group Classifications

UMR recognizes two types of student groups:

  • Registered Student Organizations (RSOs): Independent, student-run clubs.
  • Campus Life Programs (CLPs): Student-led groups that represent the University or work closely with a UMR department or unit.

All new groups begin as RSOs. Once established, student leaders may apply for CLP status to access additional University benefits and resources.

Steps to Create a New Group

  • Identify at least four UMR students to serve as officers.
  • Find one UMR faculty or staff member to serve as your advisor. This is highly recommended but not required, unless applying for CLP status.
  • Create a constitution that clearly states your group’s purpose and goals.
  • Fill out the Register New Student Group form in RaptorLink. You must sign in to RaptorLink with your University of Minnesota login information to access the form.
  • The Office of Student Activities will review your submission and contact you with the next steps.
