English Proficiency Information for International Students
Please note: You are considered an international student if you are not a U.S citizen, permanent resident, or refugee, and you will require any type of visa to study in the United States or you are currently on a temporary visa.
The test information included below is specific to international students.
The University of Minnesota Rochester requires all non-native English speakers to demonstrate a command of the English language that is necessary for success in college-level classes taught in English. If English is not your native language, take the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE exam and have your scores sent to UMR. If English is your native language, take either the ACT or SAT and have your scores sent to UMR.

The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour for only $49. The test is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample which are shared with UMR when you send your results. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test session.
Minimum score required: 105
