Drawn to the University of Minnesota Rochester’s (UMR) strong emphasis on health sciences and the opportunity to explore a range of health care careers, Alysia Vu ’19, found a place where she could learn, connect and grow professionally.

Her time at UMR was shaped by self-reflection—an exploration of her past that helped define her present. That practice, paired with the support of faculty and staff, encouraged Vu to step outside her comfort zone and believe in herself as she discovered her career path.

“It was nice to know the faculty at UMR are cheering for you and want you to succeed,” said Vu.

After completing a fellowship at a Level I trauma center following physician assistant (PA) school, she discovered her passion for emergency medicine and now works as a PA in both emergency and urgent care settings.

“I enjoy the autonomy and work-life balance that my career offers me,” Vu said. “Being a PA has allowed me to see what a privilege it is to care for patients in their most vulnerable moments.”
