UMR Approved to Expand into Discovery Square Innovation District
The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) has received approval from the University of Minnesota Board of Regents to proceed with leasing additional space in the Discovery Square Innovation District, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s continued growth and evolution.
The expansion will increase UMR’s laboratory classrooms, allow for continued enrollment growth, and place students, faculty and researchers in close proximity to BioLabs and a dynamic network of industry and research partners. The University anticipates occupying the space beginning fall 2027.
“This milestone represents far more than additional space,” said Chancellor Lori Carrell. “It reflects years of vision, advocacy, and belief in what UMR can become and what we can achieve together. Expanding into Two Discovery Square strengthens our ability to deliver hands-on, immersive learning experiences and deepen collaboration with partners shaping the future of health care and innovation.”
Located in downtown Rochester, Discovery Square is a nationally recognized hub for research and innovation, further integrating the University into this growing ecosystem while enhancing opportunities for experiential learning, research and talent development. This expansion request includes approximately 12,600 square feet of new and expanded lab classroom and support space, including lab classrooms for microbiology, biology, chemistry, and physics.
The project reflects strong partnerships across the Rochester community. Ongoing support from the City of Rochester, Destination Medical Center (DMC), and local advocates has played a vital role in advancing UMR’s vision.
“This next step allows UMR to expand opportunities for students while strengthening connections with employers and health care leaders,” Carrell said. “It ensures that more students can gain the education, skills, and experiences needed to meet critical workforce demands in Minnesota and beyond.”
The expansion in Two Discovery Square marks a bold step forward, reinforcing UMR’s role as a key contributor to the region’s innovation economy while preparing the next generation of health care professionals.
