UMR Student, Angel Lopez Accepted into the Prestigious Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Emerging Leaders Program

Current Bachelor of Science in Health Professions student Angel Lopez has been accepted into the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Emerging Leaders Program. This one‑semester program mentors students as future leaders in the sonography field.

The program provides emerging leaders with opportunities to observe professional decision‑making processes and network within the field. Participants expand their leadership skills by engaging in meaningful dialogue and completing projects centered on the future of the profession and leadership volunteerism.

Angel is originally from California and chose the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) because he knew he wanted to work in health care. He believed UMR would give him the resources and support needed to make that dream a reality. When selecting a school, Angel faced several obstacles including limited finances and a loss of direction in his hometown. Moving to Rochester, Minnesota provided the change of environment he needed.

During his time at UMR, Angel found on‑campus employment as an Undergraduate Academic Assistant and at the front desk in the Center for Learning Innovation office. These positions helped him develop communication skills and access the support he needed to pursue what once felt like a distant goal. As he built a strong foundation of resources and relationships, he became increasingly connected on campus. His connections with faculty, staff, One Stop and student success coaches helped him stay informed about campus events and opportunities that supported his growth and success.

Angel is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in Health Professions at UMR, along with a certificate in Sonography from Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, with an anticipated graduation date of May 2026.
