University of Minnesota Rochester Celebrates First-Generation College Student Week
The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is celebrating First-Generation College Student Week from November 3-7, recognizing students whose parents did not complete a four-year college or university degree.
At UMR, 33% of students identify as first-generation. These students often come from low-income households, minority communities, military service, caregiving roles or immigrant families. The week highlights their resilience and achievements in higher education.
A pop-up celebration will be held Wednesday, November 5, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the third floor of USquare. Attendees can pick up “first-gen proud” gear and connect with others in the community. A panel featuring first-generation students, staff and faculty will follow from 2-3 p.m. in the Intercultural Student Center at the Student Life Center.
Resources for students, staff and faculty include:
- First-Gen Student Success Center – Read and share #UMNFirst stories, explore events celebrating first-gen students and purchase first-gen proud gear from the UMN Bookstore.
- First-Gen Institute – Learn about the First-Gen Institute, which focuses on researching, developing and sharing evidence-based practices and building communities of praxis that support first-generation students, employees and faculty nationwide.
- Celebrate first-gen pride by customizing your Zoom background, sharing campus graphics online or adding a supportive sign to your office space.
Following First-Gen College Student Week, the First-Gen Resource Group will hold its kick-off meeting on Thursday, November 13 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in The Nest. The First-Gen Resource Group seeks to recognize the resilience, talents and experiences of students, faculty and staff at UMR while creating a sense of belonging and employee retention. All are welcome to attend. Bubble Tea will be provided.
