The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) honored student scholarship recipients and their benefactors Saturday, October 4 during the annual Scholarship Celebration, held in conjunction with Parent and Family Weekend.

About 250 attendees gathered to recognize the impact of scholarships on student success. The event featured remarks from two student speakers, each sharing personal stories of how financial support has shaped their academic journeys.

“When I think back to who I was that very first semester, I see someone full of questions, uncertainty and a lot of fear,” said Ahmed Al Hadeethi, a third-year student in his final semester. “But through the support of my professors, the encouragement of my peers and the opportunities made possible through scholarships, I’ve grown into someone more confident, resilient and ready for the challenges ahead.”

Third-year student Joy Lelei Kiptalanta reflected on the challenges that shaped her path to UMR and the role scholarships played in making her education possible.

“As is true for so many of us, my journey to UMR included struggle,” Kiptalanta said. “Although it has not been linear, since joining UMR, the trajectory has always been onwards and upwards. I’ve had the privilege of prioritizing my studies, earning the Chancellor’s List award and collaborating with UMR’s brilliant student body. Without these scholarships, it would have been near impossible for me to attend such a prestigious university in the heart of Med City.”

In the 2024-25 academic year, UMR awarded more than $2.5 million in scholarships. All students are automatically considered for scholarship support, which helps ensure access to a unique health sciences education.

“Scholarships are more than financial aid. They are acts of belief,” said Lindsey Hemker, director of development and alumni relations. “They say to a student, ‘We see your potential, and we want to walk alongside you as you pursue it.’ That encouragement can be just as transformative as the dollars themselves.”
