University of Minnesota Rochester Named an Opportunity College and University
University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) has been designated an “Opportunity College and University,” recognizing the UMR for enrolling more underrepresented students than their geographic average with undergraduate student earnings at least 50% above the median earnings compared to a similar population in their area with a high school diploma or higher credential. Only two public university campuses in the state of Minnesota received this new designation, UMR and University of Minnesota Duluth.
The “Opportunity Colleges and Universities” designation is part of a newly developed Student Access and Earnings Classification published by the Carnegie Foundation and the American Council on Education. This new classification examines the extent to which institutions foster opportunities for student success by measuring whether institutions are enrolling students reflective of the communities they serve and how the earnings of those students compare to peers in their area. Of the 1400 baccalaureate and above institutions in the country that were classified by Carnegie, less than 15% of schools achieved this designation.
UMR offers students an unparalleled education in the health sciences, including an integrated, hands-on curriculum, personalized attention and a learning experience that is truly one-of-a-kind. Immersed in the heart of one of the nation’s most health-focused communities, students engage with medical professionals on a daily basis and graduate prepared to transform knowledge into discovery in the ever-changing world of health care.
Chancellor Carrell is delighted with the new Carnegie designation:
“At the Rochester campus of the University of MInnesota, when we admit a student, we commit to their success – providing what they need to learn deeply and ultimately, to launch a health career that secures the opportunity for graduates to make a difference, and make a living. Purpose, health, financial security, contribution to community – an “opportunity” university is just the right term to describe the value of a UMR education.”
