University of Minnesota Rochester Welcomes Record-Breaking Incoming Class
The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is welcoming a record-breaking number of new students to campus this fall. Nearly 400 new students will begin their college careers at UMR on Tuesday, September 2. The number of new UMR undergraduates is up more than 80% over last year. Official “Day 10” University of Minnesota numbers of total students served on each campus, including Rochester, will be released later this fall.
Over 84% of these new UMR students are from Minnesota, and 100% are headed for careers that will address the dire healthcare workforce needs in our state. Nearly half of these new students are the first in their families to attend college.
“High school students aspiring to a wide variety of health careers receive a world-class education at this specialized campus. And, given the strong success of UMR graduates applying to medical school, we are becoming a top destination for pre-med students,” shared Terry Whittum, Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management.
Thanks to long-standing investments in student financial aid, the University of Minnesota provides a world-class education at the lowest actual cost of any four-year campus in Minnesota for students from lower- and middle-income households. The Rochester campus recently received national recognition as an “Opportunity University” by Carnegie, given the incomes of our graduates and their varied backgrounds - a distinction awarded to only 15% of campuses nationwide.
“When we admit students to UMR, we commit to their success. We’re so grateful to our local partners and the community for warmly welcoming these new, high-energy residents of downtown Rochester! It is pure joy to support the learning and development of these young people, knowing they will be serving our communities as healthcare professionals in the future. " said Chancellor Carrell
“Education is one of Rochester’s greatest strengths, and the University of Minnesota Rochester is a vital part of that. It is inspiring to see so many students begin their careers here, and I know they will continue to make a positive impact on our community and beyond,” shared City of Rochester Mayor Kim Norton
Raptor Ready Week:
Prior to the start of classes, first year students are participating in academic coursework and other activities to support their transition to college life. Raptor Ready Week is designed to spark social engagement and build community within Living Learning Communities, while connecting students to campus resources and preparing them for a confident start to college. Living Learning Communities are provided to all first year students, as one of the many distinctive, research-based practices that support the success of UMR students.
“While academics are central to the college experience, student success is also deeply shaped by personal development, peer connections and meaningful engagement outside the classroom. We are looking forward to helping each student at UMR flourish," said Heidi Anderson-Issacson, Vice Chancellor for Student Life.
