Views are a common tool on our sites, so we've standardized some of the basics:

  • When possible, use 'Content' for the output, rather than fields. We've built out several basic view modes for our main content type, so we should use those.
  • Spacing of the content in the view comes from classes added to the view. Below there are examples of different configurations.

Ten Weeks, One Mentor, Countless Lessons: Inside the CRISP Internship

Vishnuram Balasubramani, a University of Minnesota Rochester student from Tamil Nadu, India, spent 10 weeks this summer immersed in clinical research through Mayo Clinic’s Clinical Research Internship Study Program. With no prior experience, Balasubramani matched with a mentor in gastroenterology and gained hands-on skills in statistical analysis, manuscript writing and professional presentation. The experience, he said, helped shape his career goals in medicine and global health policy.

Nearly 400 new students will begin their college careers at UMR on Tuesday, September 2. The number of new UMR undergraduates is up more than 80% over last year. Official “Day 10” University of Minnesota numbers of total students served on each campus, including Rochester, will be released later this fall.

University of Minnesota Rochester Named an Opportunity College and University

University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) has been designated an “Opportunity College and University,” recognizing the UMR for enrolling more underrepresented students than their geographic average with undergraduate student earnings at least 50% above the median earnings compared to a similar population in their area with a high school diploma or higher credential. Only two public university campuses in the state of Minnesota received this new designation, UMR and University of Minnesota Duluth.

Jessica Wojcik’s ’14 passion for sonography is evident. “A friend’s daughter told me she might be interested in pursuing sonography, and I talked her ear off for half an hour,” she laughed. Her infectious passion for her career began in high school when she visited Mayo Clinic for the first time.

The ongoing international discussion about health care highlights the critical importance of a deep understanding of the political, social and economic effects of providing access to those who need it. Working with others to create social impact, health equity and environmentally responsible practice, students who complete this Career Pathway often study abroad, engage in experiential learning focused on sustainability, or complete internships in government agencies before going on to study public health, law, political science, international relations or public affairs.

On-campus Event Leads to Life Saving Donation

When Kailyn Dewey, a third-year nursing student at the University of Minnesota Rochester signed up to be a donor through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly known as Be the Match, at a tabling event on campus she had no idea that she’d get a call just eight months later telling her she was a match. Her recipient, an elderly cancer patient.

UMR Innovation: Replacing Advisor with Student Success Coach

Parry Telander, M.S., had spent a year after graduate school in a temporary position as a counselor at a community college. While searching for his next position, he came across a posting for a student success coach at the new University of Minnesota Rochester. As he learned more about the role, his interest was sparked. “I had never seen that title before, ‘student success coach.’ It hadn’t been used elsewhere in Minnesota or in the greater midwest. It’s a very unique position. The idea of a coach is a much different role than a [traditional] ‘advisor’.”

Solving Health Care Challenges Through Policy and Action

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the University of Minnesota Rochester’s first graduating class. Evan Doyle, M.S. in public health is one of the inaugural class graduates of UMR’s Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) class of 2013. While the current enrollment has blossomed into nearly 1,000 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs, it all started with one class and one program that paved the way for those to come.

BSHP Alumni Profile: Maria Cisneros Pito

At the intersection of technology and health care, there stands a professional who is a crucial bridge for patients and their care. In radiology, that’s the radiology technologist. Serving as that key advocate for patients was one of the biggest draws of radiography for 2021 UMR alumna Maria Cisneros Pito. “Radiography is more about compassion and care than people realize. Reflections from Chancellor Emeritus Lehmkuhle

Chancellor Emeritus Stephen Lehmkuhle was the inaugural Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester, serving from 2007 until his retirement in 2017. During his time at UMR, the inaugural Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences class began their careers, the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions program launched, UMR’s mascot, Rockie the Raptor, was created and the first class of UMR graduated with many more to follow. Chancellor Emeritus Lehmkuhle reflects upon his time at UMR in both his book, “Campus With Purpose,” and in conversation with our editors, who asked him to elaborate on those early years and share insights on that first class, what makes him #UMRProud and where life has taken him after UMR.

Experiencing Medicine Abroad

Tenzin Sopa wanted to learn more about her culture’s history and traditions while also deepening her passion for medicine. While enrolled in a course through the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Tibetan Medicine: Ethics, Spirituality and Healing, Tenzin learned of the opportunity to travel to and immerse herself in Tibetan Medicine and jumped at the chance to study in Dharamsala, India in May 2023, during her fourth year at the University of Minnesota Rochester.

As part of her undergraduate studies, UMR alumna, Ruqayah Ali decided to conduct an independent qualitative research study on the experience of Muslim undergraduate women in the STEM field with the hijab. On Friday, April 21, the University of Minnesota Rochester celebrated the hard work and accomplishments of students at the annual Beaker Awards, UMR’s student recognition event developed to celebrate those who have upheld Student Learning and Development Outcomes. Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

In the United States, April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). This year’s theme is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” Throughout April, UMR’s SAAPM committee will look at sexual assault as it occurs in different spaces and communities and focus on ways to elevate and evolve prevention and intervention efforts to address this global crisis. Join in the activities and experiences this month to promote sexual assault awareness and prevention and show support for all victim/survivors.

UMR Students Accepted to the American College of Cardiology Young Scholars Program

Two University of Minnesota Rochester students were accepted into the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Young Scholars Program. As part of this program, first year Joud Sakor and junior Sophia Moore will participate in a year long mentorship program to provide an introduction to the field of cardiology, open up research opportunities, accessibility to the yearly ACC conference and meet scientists from around the world. The two join current UMR student and ACC Young Scholar Enrique Alvirez-Gonzalez, a senior graduating this spring. The three students were asked to provide more information about their experiences.

UMR’s Community Collaboratory (CoLab) course welcomes local 9th graders to campus.

9th grade students from John Marshall (JM) High School had the opportunity to visit UMR and learn more about the campus, participate in a university learning experience and determine how UMR aligns with their future goals. This visit was a collaboration between Cradle to Career (C2C) and UMR’s Community Collaboratory (CoLab) course taught by Dr. James Ford. UMR Alumni, Misk Al-Zahidy ‘20 works with C2C and was responsible for this experience coming to fruition.

Ten Weeks, One Mentor, Countless Lessons: Inside the CRISP Internship

Vishnuram Balasubramani, a University of Minnesota Rochester student from Tamil Nadu, India, spent 10 weeks this summer immersed in clinical research through Mayo Clinic’s Clinical Research Internship Study Program. With no prior experience, Balasubramani matched with a mentor in gastroenterology and gained hands-on skills in statistical analysis, manuscript writing and professional presentation. The experience, he said, helped shape his career goals in medicine and global health policy.

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is welcoming a record-breaking number of new students to campus this fall. Nearly 400 new students will begin their college careers at UMR on Tuesday, September 2. The number of new UMR undergraduates is up more than 80% over last year. Official “Day 10” University of Minnesota numbers of total students served on each campus, including Rochester, will be released later this fall.

University of Minnesota Rochester Named an Opportunity College and University

University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) has been designated an “Opportunity College and University,” recognizing the UMR for enrolling more underrepresented students than their geographic average with undergraduate student earnings at least 50% above the median earnings compared to a similar population in their area with a high school diploma or higher credential. Only two public university campuses in the state of Minnesota received this new designation, UMR and University of Minnesota Duluth.

Jessica Wojcik’s ’14 passion for sonography is evident. “A friend’s daughter told me she might be interested in pursuing sonography, and I talked her ear off for half an hour,” she laughed. Her infectious passion for her career began in high school when she visited Mayo Clinic for the first time.

When Kailyn Dewey, a third-year nursing student at the University of Minnesota Rochester signed up to be a donor through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly known as Be the Match, at a tabling event on campus she had no idea that she’d get a call just eight months later telling her she was a match. Her recipient, an elderly cancer patient.

UMR Innovation: Replacing Advisor with Student Success Coach

Parry Telander, M.S., had spent a year after graduate school in a temporary position as a counselor at a community college. While searching for his next position, he came across a posting for a student success coach at the new University of Minnesota Rochester. As he learned more about the role, his interest was sparked. “I had never seen that title before, ‘student success coach.’ It hadn’t been used elsewhere in Minnesota or in the greater midwest. It’s a very unique position. The idea of a coach is a much different role than a [traditional] ‘advisor’.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the University of Minnesota Rochester’s first graduating class. Evan Doyle, M.S. in public health is one of the inaugural class graduates of UMR’s Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) class of 2013. While the current enrollment has blossomed into nearly 1,000 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs, it all started with one class and one program that paved the way for those to come.

BSHP Alumni Profile: Maria Cisneros Pito

At the intersection of technology and health care, there stands a professional who is a crucial bridge for patients and their care. In radiology, that’s the radiology technologist. Serving as that key advocate for patients was one of the biggest draws of radiography for 2021 UMR alumna Maria Cisneros Pito. “Radiography is more about compassion and care than people realize. You definitely have to be empathetic. We’re also the safety commissioners of our machines. We’re the watcher making sure the machine is doing what’s correct. We’re the ones making sure the scan is going well.”

The Power of Poetry to Heal

UMR alumna Amarachi Orakwue ’19 discovered her love of poetry in an eighth-grade creative writing class. “Our teacher gave us an assignment to write a poem. I remember writing mine. It was very easy to write. I brought it to class and my teacher read it. She was the first person to call me a poet.”

Reflections from Chancellor Emeritus Lehmkuhle

Chancellor Emeritus Stephen Lehmkuhle was the inaugural Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester, serving from 2007 until his retirement in 2017. During his time at UMR, the inaugural Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences class began their careers, the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions program launched, UMR’s mascot, Rockie the Raptor, was created and the first class of UMR graduated with many more to follow. Chancellor Emeritus Lehmkuhle reflects upon his time at UMR in both his book, “Campus With Purpose,” and in conversation with our editors, who asked him to elaborate on those early years and share insights on that first class, what makes him #UMRProud and where life has taken him after UMR.

Experiencing Medicine Abroad

Tenzin Sopa wanted to learn more about her culture’s history and traditions while also deepening her passion for medicine. While enrolled in a course through the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Tibetan Medicine: Ethics, Spirituality and Healing, Tenzin learned of the opportunity to travel to and immerse herself in Tibetan Medicine and jumped at the chance to study in Dharamsala, India in May 2023, during her fourth year at the University of Minnesota Rochester.

On Friday, April 21, the University of Minnesota Rochester celebrated the hard work and accomplishments of students at the annual Beaker Awards, UMR’s student recognition event developed to celebrate those who have upheld Student Learning and Development Outcomes. Awardees are nominated by their professors, coaches, peers and other UMR community members. This year’s event celebrated and recognized more than 80 nominees.

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

In the United States, April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). This year’s theme is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” Throughout April, UMR’s SAAPM committee will look at sexual assault as it occurs in different spaces and communities and focus on ways to elevate and evolve prevention and intervention efforts to address this global crisis. Join in the activities and experiences this month to promote sexual assault awareness and prevention and show support for all victim/survivors.

UMR Students Accepted to the American College of Cardiology Young Scholars Program

Two University of Minnesota Rochester students were accepted into the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Young Scholars Program. As part of this program, first year Joud Sakor and junior Sophia Moore will participate in a year long mentorship program to provide an introduction to the field of cardiology, open up research opportunities, accessibility to the yearly ACC conference and meet scientists from around the world. The two join current UMR student and ACC Young Scholar Enrique Alvirez-Gonzalez, a senior graduating this spring. The three students were asked to provide more information about their experiences.

9th grade students from John Marshall (JM) High School had the opportunity to visit UMR and learn more about the campus, participate in a university learning experience and determine how UMR aligns with their future goals. This visit was a collaboration between Cradle to Career (C2C) and UMR’s Community Collaboratory (CoLab) course taught by Dr. James Ford. UMR Alumni, Misk Al-Zahidy ‘20 works with C2C and was responsible for this experience coming to fruition.

Ten years ago, UMR Biochemistry Associate Professor Cassidy Terrell was completing her PhD in biochemistry at the University of Texas, Austin. But while she’d started the degree planning to pursue an industry career in drug discovery research, she gradually realized that her heart was leading her down another path.

Ten Weeks, One Mentor, Countless Lessons: Inside the CRISP Internship

Vishnuram Balasubramani, a University of Minnesota Rochester student from Tamil Nadu, India, spent 10 weeks this summer immersed in clinical research through Mayo Clinic’s Clinical Research Internship Study Program. With no prior experience, Balasubramani matched with a mentor in gastroenterology and gained hands-on skills in statistical analysis, manuscript writing and professional presentation. The experience, he said, helped shape his career goals in medicine and global health policy.

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is welcoming a record-breaking number of new students to campus this fall. Nearly 400 new students will begin their college careers at UMR on Tuesday, September 2. The number of new UMR undergraduates is up more than 80% over last year. Official “Day 10” University of Minnesota numbers of total students served on each campus, including Rochester, will be released later this fall.

University of Minnesota Rochester Named an Opportunity College and University

University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) has been designated an “Opportunity College and University,” recognizing the UMR for enrolling more underrepresented students than their geographic average with undergraduate student earnings at least 50% above the median earnings compared to a similar population in their area with a high school diploma or higher credential. Only two public university campuses in the state of Minnesota received this new designation, UMR and University of Minnesota Duluth.

Jessica Wojcik’s ’14 passion for sonography is evident. “A friend’s daughter told me she might be interested in pursuing sonography, and I talked her ear off for half an hour,” she laughed. Her infectious passion for her career began in high school when she visited Mayo Clinic for the first time.

Meet Rithinay - Public Policy and Global Health Pathways Featured Student

The ongoing international discussion about health care highlights the critical importance of a deep understanding of the political, social and economic effects of providing access to those who need it. UMR students can explore the implications of the delivery of health care and can create careers based on the creation of policy that addresses societal concerns. Working with others to create social impact, health equity and environmentally responsible practice, students who complete this Career Pathway often study abroad, engage in experiential learning focused on sustainability, or complete internships in government agencies before going on to study public health, law, political science, international relations or public affairs.

On-campus Event Leads to Life Saving Donation

When Kailyn Dewey, a third-year nursing student at the University of Minnesota Rochester signed up to be a donor through the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), formerly known as Be the Match, at a tabling event on campus she had no idea that she’d get a call just eight months later telling her she was a match. Her recipient, an elderly cancer patient.

UMR Innovation: Replacing Advisor with Student Success Coach

Parry Telander, M.S., had spent a year after graduate school in a temporary position as a counselor at a community college. While searching for his next position, he came across a posting for a student success coach at the new University of Minnesota Rochester. As he learned more about the role, his interest was sparked. “I had never seen that title before, ‘student success coach.’ It hadn’t been used elsewhere in Minnesota or in the greater midwest. It’s a very unique position. The idea of a coach is a much different role than a [traditional] ‘advisor’.”

Solving Health Care Challenges Through Policy and Action

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the University of Minnesota Rochester’s first graduating class. Evan Doyle, M.S. in public health is one of the inaugural class graduates of UMR’s Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) class of 2013. While the current enrollment has blossomed into nearly 1,000 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs, it all started with one class and one program that paved the way for those to come.

BSHP Alumni Profile: Maria Cisneros Pito

At the intersection of technology and health care, there stands a professional who is a crucial bridge for patients and their care. In radiology, that’s the radiology technologist. Serving as that key advocate for patients was one of the biggest draws of radiography for 2021 UMR alumna Maria Cisneros Pito. “Radiography is more about compassion and care than people realize. You definitely have to be empathetic. We’re also the safety commissioners of our machines. We’re the watcher making sure the machine is doing what’s correct. We’re the ones making sure the scan is going well.”

The Power of Poetry to Heal

UMR alumna Amarachi Orakwue ’19 discovered her love of poetry in an eighth-grade creative writing class. “Our teacher gave us an assignment to write a poem. I remember writing mine. It was very easy to write. I brought it to class and my teacher read it. She was the first person to call me a poet.”

Reflections from Chancellor Emeritus Lehmkuhle

Chancellor Emeritus Stephen Lehmkuhle was the inaugural Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester, serving from 2007 until his retirement in 2017. During his time at UMR, the inaugural Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences class began their careers, the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions program launched, UMR’s mascot, Rockie the Raptor, was created and the first class of UMR graduated with many more to follow. Chancellor Emeritus Lehmkuhle reflects upon his time at UMR in both his book, “Campus With Purpose,” and in conversation with our editors, who asked him to elaborate on those early years and share insights on that first class, what makes him #UMRProud and where life has taken him after UMR.

The University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) hosted Interim President Jeff Ettinger on Friday, October 6 to share UMR’s focus on student success while providing the opportunity for him to engage with the UMR community. During his visit, Interim President Ettinger was given a comprehensive tour of campus and time to meet and connect with UMR students, campus and local leadership and members of the UMR community. 

UMR Announces Launch of Campus and Climate Action Planning

The University of Minnesota Rochester’s Campus and Climate Action Planning process launched on September 13, 2023. The plan that will be created will support UMR's commitment to excellence sustained through managed enrollment growth by identifying time horizons and criteria for strategic decision points in a phased approach to facilities expansion.

Experiencing Medicine Abroad

Tenzin Sopa wanted to learn more about her culture’s history and traditions while also deepening her passion for medicine. While enrolled in a course through the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, Tibetan Medicine: Ethics, Spirituality and Healing, Tenzin learned of the opportunity to travel to and immerse herself in Tibetan Medicine and jumped at the chance to study in Dharamsala, India in May 2023, during her fourth year at the University of Minnesota Rochester.

UMR Student Conducts Research on Student Experience with the Hijab

As part of her undergraduate studies, UMR alumna, Ruqayah Ali decided to conduct an independent qualitative research study on the experience of Muslim undergraduate women in the STEM field with the hijab. Her research project is titled, "The Hidden Meanings Behind the Hijab to Muslim Undergraduate Women."

On Friday, April 21, the University of Minnesota Rochester celebrated the hard work and accomplishments of students at the annual Beaker Awards, UMR’s student recognition event developed to celebrate those who have upheld Student Learning and Development Outcomes. Awardees are nominated by their professors, coaches, peers and other UMR community members. This year’s event celebrated and recognized more than 80 nominees.

UMR’s CoLab course is team taught and covers concepts related to health disparities, social determinants of health, intersectionality and cultural humility. Students are matched with community partners in Rochester that engage in work relevant to these topics.

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

In the United States, April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). This year’s theme is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” Throughout April, UMR’s SAAPM committee will look at sexual assault as it occurs in different spaces and communities and focus on ways to elevate and evolve prevention and intervention efforts to address this global crisis. Join in the activities and experiences this month to promote sexual assault awareness and prevention and show support for all victim/survivors.

UMR Students Accepted to the American College of Cardiology Young Scholars Program

Two University of Minnesota Rochester students were accepted into the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Young Scholars Program. As part of this program, first year Joud Sakor and junior Sophia Moore will participate in a year long mentorship program to provide an introduction to the field of cardiology, open up research opportunities, accessibility to the yearly ACC conference and meet scientists from around the world. The two join current UMR student and ACC Young Scholar Enrique Alvirez-Gonzalez, a senior graduating this spring. The three students were asked to provide more information about their experiences.

UMR’s Community Collaboratory (CoLab) course welcomes local 9th graders to campus.

9th grade students from John Marshall (JM) High School had the opportunity to visit UMR and learn more about the campus, participate in a university learning experience and determine how UMR aligns with their future goals. This visit was a collaboration between Cradle to Career (C2C) and UMR’s Community Collaboratory (CoLab) course taught by Dr. James Ford. UMR Alumni, Misk Al-Zahidy ‘20 works with C2C and was responsible for this experience coming to fruition.

Ten years ago, UMR Biochemistry Associate Professor Cassidy Terrell was completing her PhD in biochemistry at the University of Texas, Austin. But while she’d started the degree planning to pursue an industry career in drug discovery research, she gradually realized that her heart was leading her down another path.
