Off-Campus Research for Academic Credit

UMR students who enroll in academic credits for off-campus research enhance their transcripts, gain the chance to critically reflect on and analyze their experiences with peers, and gain comprehensive feedback from both supervisors and UMR faculty that guarantees professional and career growth. See below for off-campus research opportunities that require academic credits.

UMR BSHS students may apply for Mayo Clinic Special Research Student (SRS) appointments as early as the spring of their sophomore year. This opportunity is intended to provide meaningful research experience to students with an interest in research and to expose them to educational opportunities at Mayo Clinic for prospective candidates to the biomedical sciences PhD and MD-PhD programs. The experience is unpaid.

Students must:

    • Have at least one semester of research experience
    • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
    • Can dedicate at least 10 hours per week to the experience
    • Plan to commit for a semester (or ideally one academic year)
    • Meet the course prerequisites outlined within the application

Watch for details in the Raptor Report each October and February. If accepted, students do need to complete the form on the Signing-up and Registering for Internships & Off-Campus Research Credits.

    • Applications for fall experiences are due March 25
    • Applications for spring experiences are due October 24

The Student Training Experience Program (STEP) partners with UMR students, who will be participating in a research experience for up to two consecutive semesters at The Hormel Institute.

STEP will allow students to apply knowledge learned through coursework while gaining practical experience within the research field. Students will be provided with various opportunities to help them gain real biomedical research experience, enhance professional development and increase their understanding and appreciation for the research and science profession.
