How to initiate your Internet ID (x.500) account

All students at the U of M are provided with free Internet access and a personal email account. You must activate your U of M email account in order to receive your bill and other pertinent information. This email account is also your link to registering for future courses online.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to https://www.umn.edu/initiate

  2. Enter your student ID, social security number and your date of birth.

  3. Select and confirm your password. Please take all password rules into consideration.

  4. Select the “Submit Form” button.

Forwarding your email to an existing account

We realize that you may have an existing personal email account. All correspondences from the University of Minnesota and the College of Education will be directed to your U of M account. If you do not plan to check your U of M email account, you may have your mail forwarded to an existing account. Please note that some email services, i.e. hotmail, yahoo, etc., may automatically move U of M email to a junk mail or deleted mail folder. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are receiving your U of M email, as email is the official form of communication with the University. Follow these directions to forward your email, or contact 1-Help at (612) 301-4357.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to mail.umn.edu and sign in.

  2. Click the Gear icon in the upper right and select Settings.

  3. Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

  4. Click on Add a forwarding address.

Please note that you will still need to know your U of M Internet ID and password in order to register for classes online.
