Join the Black Student Union for an enlightening night, celebrating Black excellence through performances, entertainment and more! Dinner will be provided. The theme this year is Red Carpet/Award Show!

 

Black History Month Display - Black Joy
Monday, February 12 - Friday, February 16
USquare, 3rd floor

Stop by the USquare 3rd floor atrium this week to view a display dedicated to Black changemakers from Minnesota and beyond. Read about Black Joy and share what Black Joy means to you or how you as an ally can create space for Black Joy. If you would like to share your Black Joy picture on the board this week, contact Emiko Walker at oonkx001@r.umn.edu.

 

BHM Movie Night

In honor of Black History Month and to celebrate black artists and filmmakers, join us for a screening of "Black Panther 2" at the Intercultural Student Center on Friday, Feb 16. All students are invited. Pizza will be served

 

Still We Rise: Rochester Black Legacy Exhibit

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to a pop-up exhibit to showcase key leaders and events that have shaped the local community and its history.

 

Health CORE Still We Rise Program

Health CORE welcomes all UMR students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members to a program about African Americans in diverse medical careers. Speakers will include community leaders from Mayo Clinic, Olmsted Medical Center and the local arts community. The program will feature the “Still We Rise: Rochester Black Legacy” exhibit for Black History Month. Stop by to learn more about Black history in arts and medicine. Refreshments will be served.

Explore Black art from the UMR community and local Rochester artists and community leaders. Immerse yourself into the Still We Rise: Rochester Black Legacy exhibit. Refreshments will be served.

 

Diversity Dialogue - Black History Month
Thursday, February 22 | 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Student Life Center, Intercultural Student Center

Join the Diversity and Inclusion Committee in an engaging discussion for faculty, staff and students focusing on appreciation for Black art and the contributions of Black artists. The discussion will be led by Nicole "Cole" Asong Nfonoyim-Hara, a writer committed to liberation and healing through story and the power of the language and the written word. Refreshments will be served.

 

Book Discussion: 1619 Project
Wednesday, February 28 | noon - 1 p.m.
Student Life Center, Intercultural Student Center

Join the Diversity & Inclusion Committee  for a discussion surrounding Chapter 15 (Healthcare) of The 1619 Project, a book that centers on the history of how systems of oppression were established in the United States and how they continue to impact our lives today. The book is available online through the UMN Library, but anyone is welcome at the event even if you’ve not yet read the chapter or book.

 

These events are open to all students, staff, and faculty members, regardless of sex, gender, disabilities, religion, race, ethnicity, national origin, or other identities. The conversations will center the experiences of specific BIPOC communities, and all are welcome to join the conversations and experiences.
