Health Professions Mentoring Program

The purpose of the program is for BSHP students to serve as mentors to prospective students who will be applying to the BSHP program.

The Health Professions Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for current UMR students to participate in a mentoring experience with current students in the Bachelor of Science in Health Professions, an educational collaboration between the University of Minnesota Rochester and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.

Overview

The purpose of the program is to have current BSHP students serve as mentors to prospective students who will be applying to the BSHP program for the next academic year. The aim of the program is for mentors to provide accurate information, preparation, and guidance to prospective students about the BSHP application process. Through the mentoring relationship, the mentor will have the opportunity to develop competencies expected from future health care professionals while the mentee would be able to learn how to navigate the UMR and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences application process. The program will also help mentees with the transition of being a dual student at both UMR and the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences.

The program aims to increase the applicant pool for the BSHP and help prospective navigate the application process through:

  • One-on-one mentoring, in-person or virtually
  • Group activities throughout the semester
  • Developing competencies needed in the health care profession
