Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Looking to transfer to UMR?

Understanding how your transfer courses or standardized exams apply to your UMR degree can help you plan your path to graduation.

Transfer Credits

Transferable credit:

Courses that count toward your overall graduation, a minimum of 120 credits required. The Transferology website provides a list of transferable courses, and if they are a match for UMR transfer.

Liberal education:

Core requirements for all students, regardless of major.

Major, Minor, or Prerequisite Requirements:

Courses that fulfill a requirement for your declared major or minor.

Equivalent course:

A course from another institution that has been approved as a direct match to a course at UMR. Transfer courses that are equivalent to a course required for your major or minor are applied to your degree upon review of an official transcript.

This information is provided for basic understanding only. You should always consult with your student success coach to determine your final transfer plan.

Submitting a Course for Review

Please select the option below that best aligns with your relationship to the University of Minnesota Rochester campus. You can expect to hear an outcome of the review within four weeks.

Curious how your transfer credits may count toward your degree?

If you plan to transfer in course credits from another institution it's good idea to check and see how your courses will transfer. The University of Minnesota Rochester uses Transferology as our public Transfer Course database, which you may use to check to see if a course has already been reviewed for transfer. New courses are added weekly, as they are reviewed.

If you find a course that has not been evaluated in Transferology, you may follow the Submit a Course for Review process.

If you have questions about the outcome or you have unique circumstances, contact admissions at umrtransfer@r.umn.edu.

If you are a current UMR student and have completed a course at another institution, you should start by submitting an official transcript. Once the transcript is evaluated by the Office of Admissions, you may want to submit the course for Departmental review to see if it is a direct course equivalent, or whether it might count as an elective within your major department using the Submit a Course for Review process outlined below.

Note: International coursework is not currently displayed in Transferology or reviewed using this form. Visit the Learning Abroad Center's Academic Planning webpage to use the U Credit Abroad Search tool to help you identify international coursework that will transfer.

Step 1: Submit transcripts of your completed coursework to the Office of Admissions.
It usually takes 7-10 days for a transcript to be processed

Step 2: Once the transcript is processed, review your APAS report.
IF the APAS lists an exact course number, an equivalency has been established. Do NOT submit that course for review.
IF the APAS does not use an exact course number, but you feel a course is a good match to a U of M course ("equivalent course") or could serve as a prerequisite or elective for your major, continue to Step 3.

Step 3: Submit a Course for Review.
You should receive an email response to your request within four weeks of submission. If you have questions about the outcome or you have unique circumstances, contact your student success coach.

If you are a current UMR student planning to take a course at another institution, it's a good idea to check and see if that course will transfer back to the University of Minnesota Rochester campus. You can use Transferology to check to see if a course has already been reviewed for transfer by following the steps below. If you decide to submit a course for review, you should receive an email response within four weeks. If you have questions about the results or you have unique circumstances please contact your student success coach.

Note: International coursework is not currently displayed in Transferology or reviewed using this form. Visit the Learning Abroad Center's Academic Planning webpage to use the U Credit Abroad Search tool to help you identify international coursework that will transfer.

Step 1: Check to see if a course from the institution you want to attend has been evaluated for transfer to the UMR. This is called "finding a replacement course."

How to look up a Replacement Course on Transferology.

  1. Click "Find a replacement course" in Transferology

  2. Enter "University of Minnesota-Rochester" as the school you currently attend

  3. Identify a course or requirement category that you want to fulfill.

    • Use the course tab when you know exactly what UMR course you want to fulfill.

    • Use the Requirement Categories to look for courses that fulfill Liberal Education (LE) requirements or courses that meet Bachelor of Science in Health Professions admission requirements.

Search for matches, get results, and then filter the results or use the name search to find the best institutional fit for you.

Step 2: Understand your Transferology search results.

Course Matches & Requirement Category (LE) matches show established equivalencies. If you do not see a match for a school that you were expecting, we encourage you to submit a course for review.

How courses are evaluated

  • Evaluates transfer courses to determine if they transfer to UMR, based on the following criteria:
  • Whether the institution is regionally accredited.

  • The mission of the institution (credit is not normally transferred from specialized or proprietary institutions, military schools, or industry-based education programs.)

  • The comparability of the coursework with UMR coursework.

  • The appropriateness of the coursework for meeting baccalaureate degree requirements.

Evaluates transfer courses to determine:

  • If they meet any of the Liberal Education (LE) requirements.

  • If they will be accepted as a substitute course for a program requirement category (e.g. an Upper Division Course requirement).

Evaluate transfer courses to determine:

  • If they are a direct course match with a University of Minnesota Rochester course; often called an equivalent course.

  • If they will be accepted as a substitute for a required course in a program.

At this time, international courses are only reviewed after a student confirms their enrollment and should NOT be submitted using the process below. Please contact the UMTC Office of Admissions if you have questions.
