Transferring Credits

Understanding and following the U of M’s transfer credit policies and process is essential.

National Student Exchange Resources

  • Conversion of quarter credits: The U of M follows a semester calendar. Quarter credits from other U.S. institutions are usually converted to semester credits by multiplying the number of quarter credits by 2/3. For example, 30 quarter credits equal 20 semester credits.
  • Residence requirement for graduation: Regardless of the number of transferable credits, in order to complete a degree at the U of M a student must take a minimum of 30 semester credits offered through the University, including 24 credits taken after admission to the major or program and taken from the college offering the major or program. Students must also take 15 of their last 30 credits at the U of M to be eligible to graduate
  • Grade records: Individual transfer courses, credits and grades will not appear on your University of Minnesota transcript. The approved transfer courses and grades earned will appear on your APAS report and a memo will be added to your transcript.
  • Types of credit that generally DO transfer: The University of Minnesota generally accepts transfer credit from regionally accredited schools in the United States, and from internationally recognized schools in other countries. Transfer credit will generally be given for coursework that is similar in level and content to courses offered at the U of M. Standard liberal arts courses tend to transfer easily (e.g., courses in the arts, humanities, mathematics, physical and biological sciences, and social sciences).
  • Types of credit that generally DO NOT transfer: Vocational, technical or skills-based course credits generally don't transfer. Credits for courses not offered for credit at the U of M Twin Cities also don't usually transfer. Examples of these types of courses are aviation, restaurant or hotel management, or real estate. The U of M usually does not accept transfer credits for religion courses that are doctrinal, confessional, or sectarian in nature. All credits earned through NSE must be evaluated by the U of M's Office of Admissions.

Finding information about the courses offered at an NSE school is very important. Your Student Success Coach needs course information in order to make sure that courses fit appropriately.

How you access course information depends on which NSE school you are placed at:

  1. Please make sure to review the “course limitations” and “closed programs” listed for your host school at NSE.org. You may not have access to all courses offered at your host school. Having course flexibility can be very beneficial.

  2. Your host NSE coordinator should be able to assist you in identifying course options at your host school and outlining the registration process.

  3. There are two places to begin your research on course options:

    1. Visit your NSE school’s Web site and search for the course handbook/catalog/prospectus.

    2. Visit your NSE school’s Web site and search for the department(s) through which you wish to take courses.

Identify several courses you wish to take on exchange. Keep in mind, you are not guaranteed access to every course, select several backup choices. Once you’ve identified several courses, compile this information:

  • Course description and objectives

  • Text(s) used/required readings or, if not available, the recommended reading list

  • Number of credits/hours

  • Prerequisites or overall degree program to illustrate where the course fits with other courses

  • A course syllabus. If it isn’t available on the website, you may need to contact the department offering the course directly. Your host NSE coordinator may be of assistance as well.

Note: You must meet all prerequisites required by the host campus.

Before Your Exchange:

Students should work with their student success coach to identify courses that will fit with the student’s academic plan. Determine how the courses will transfer to satisfy the following areas of the BSHS degree:

  • Degree credits
  • General Education
  • Health Sciences major requirements

Student and coach should work together and reference Transferology to review transferability of NSE courses.

If decisions of how NSE courses are not available in Transferology, student and coach can following the steps for Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Once the student has registered for courses at the host campus, student should provide their coach and NSE coordinator with final list of courses they are intending to complete at the host institution.

After Your Exchange:

Students must send an official transcript with final grades posted to the University of MInnesota Rochester. Electronic or hard copies are accepted.

For hard copy of official transcript, mail to:

UMR Admissions Processing

  • Once the transcript is received, it will be processed and courses posted to the student’s  APAS report.
  • The NSE Coordinator and student success coach will do a review of the student’s APAS report to ensure courses are populated correctly per pre-approved transfer evaluation decisions.
  • Student will then be notified that transfer courses were successfully applied to the the student’s APAS report.
