This Early Assurance option guarantees first-year students at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMN Rochester) entry into the University of Minnesota Twin Cities nursing program.

About the Program

UMN Rochester's Early Assurance Nursing Program  guarantees first-year students entry into the University of Minnesota Twin Cities nursing program. Students apply to the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) program and complete their first year of courses (including Bachelor of Science in Nursing prerequisite courses) in the BSHS program. In their sophomore year, students begin the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program on the Rochester campus.

Students selected for the Early Assurance Nursing option will complete all four years of their collegiate experience on the UMN Rochester campus and will complete their required nursing practicum experiences at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

*A cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be earned in the student's first year at UMN Rochester to continue on in the Early Assurance program.

How this unique partnership works?

  • If admitted into the Early Assurance Nursing program, students complete their first year of courses (including BSN prerequisite courses) at the University of Minnesota Rochester in the Health Sciences program.
  • Students begin the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Bachelor of BSN degree program on the Rochester campus during their sophomore year, provided they achieve a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their first year and complete the course prerequisites.
  • Students complete their second through fourth year in the BSN program on the Rochester campus.
  • Practicum experience is completed at the Mayo Clinic.
  • Students graduate with a BSN degree from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
  • This Rochester-located nursing program is competitive and capacity is limited.

Application Information

Competitive applicants will have a strong cumulative GPA and STEM GPA. Extracurriculars, especially related to science or healthcare, show readiness for a career in nursing. In addition, competitive applicants will have completed or have these courses in progress during their senior year of high school:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Four years of mathematics at the Intermediate Algebra/Algebra I level and above

Tuition

Starting in the first year of the BSN program (second year at the University of Minnesota Rochester), EA Nursing students will be officially classified as University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMTC) BSN students and will be charged University of Minnesota Twin Cities tuition. Out-of-state tuition rates will apply to students with residency in states other than Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and the province of Manitoba, Canada.
 
Scholarships granted by the University of Minnesota Rochester will apply only during the student's first year in the BSHS program. Once in the UMTC BSN program, students will have the opportunity to apply for scholarships specific to BSN students.

How to apply?

  • Apply to the BSHS program at UMN Rochester during the senior year of high school by December 1.
  • Students submit one application to be evaluated for both the BSHS program and the EA Nursing Program.
  • Students complete the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences application and select Early Assurance Nursing as their program of interest. In order to be considered for the program, applicants must complete the EA Nursing acknowledgement statement.
  • Applications will be reviewed first for the BSHS program. 
  • Application review for EA Nursing begins on December 1 and decisions for the EA Nursing program will be released in January.
