National Student Exchange

NSE is the best decision and experience I’ve done so far. I challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone.

- Casey, UMR Alumna

National Student Exchange (NSE)

The NSE is a study away program, much like study abroad, involving a group of U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR).

Study away for a summer, a semester or for a year. Locations encompass nearly 200 colleges and universities in the:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • Guam
  • Puerto Rico
  • U. S. Virgin Islands

Experience a different area with its unique cultural and academic opportunities. Students utilize NSE to:

  • broaden their personal and educational perspectives
  • experience new cultures
  • explore new areas of study
  • learn from different professors
  • access new courses
  • experience personal growth
  • meet new people
  • make new friends
  • live in a different area
  • investigate graduate schools
  • seek future employment

A Life-Changing Experience

Many returning students describe NSE as a life-changing experience which has made them more independent, self-confident and resourceful; expanded their risk-taking capabilities; and helped them better define their academic and career objectives.

Prior to exchange, you will develop an academic agreement to ensure that the work you satisfactorily complete on exchange will count toward your degree program at our campus. Your selection for participation will be done by our campus. Placements at the host campuses are made by that campus on a space availability basis. With placement rates of 97 percent, students can generally find a location to meet both their academic and personal objectives.

If you are interested in applying for an exchange, stop by the Student Resource Center to gather more information or contact Lainey Brottem at [email protected] with questions.
