I believe independent and critical thinking is crucial to student learning. When I help students one on one, I try not to just explain things for them, and instead get them to answer their own questions. I also try to show students how their knowledge is cumulative and integrated across disciplines. When I teach I try to bring in concepts I know they have learned in other classes, whether that is an earlier Biology course, a Chemistry, Sociology, or Writing.
