University of Minnesota Rochester Announces Exceeding Campaign Goal, Enrollment Growth, Expanded Academic Offerings and Campus Expansion at Annual State of the Campus Address

University of Minnesota Rochester reflected on bringing in a record-breaking number of new students, exciting announcements and many successes at the 2025 State of the Campus event. The University of Minnesota Rochester now serves 1,122 students. 

Chancellor Lori J. Carrell and President Rebecca Cunningham welcomed attendees to a program centered on the theme Bolder by Design, celebrating UMR’s commitment to purposeful innovation, student-centered transformation and its defining collaborative spirit.

The event featured:

• Key announcements
  • Campus Expansion Plans: The University of Minnesota is pursuing strategic investment for near-term facilities expansion of the Rochester campus with an RFP expected in early 2026 for a portion of the needed facilities. Overall, the University expects to seek funding and Board of Regents approvals to expand the Rochester campus to accommodate 2,500 students:
    • first, a lab classroom expansion in Discovery Square
    • second, academic space, a learning innovation center, campus gathering space and more in a downtown location
    • third, a student residence and recreational district on University-owned land adjacent to Soldier’s Field
  • Expanded Academic Offerings: The University of Minnesota Rochester announced further academic program expansion being advanced by faculty. Those two academic specialties include:
    • Biomedical Health – to further support our expanding population of pre-med students
    • Mental Health and Wellbeing - noting Minnesota’s heartbreaking rural shortages of mental health professionals in 80% of our state’s counties.
  • Strategic Investment: The University of Minnesota Rochester’s Onward scholarship campaign surpassed its $5 million goal, with community members and partners pledging support to UMR students. The Rochester campus is now ready to design an even bolder philanthropic agenda.
• Inspiring stories from the UMR community: including alumnus Matthew Spiten, current student Vishnuram Balasubramani and associate professor Cassidy Terrell.
• Gratitude to the community for their support as this start-up campus continues its growth.
• A forward-looking vision for the University of Minnesota, including a newly announced strategic roadmap.
• A moment of recognition honoring veterans for their service
