Evaluation of Transfer Credits

Understanding how your transfer courses or standardized exams apply to your University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) degree can help you plan your path to graduation.

Transferable Credit:

Courses that count toward your overall graduation, a minimum of 120 credits required. Transferology provides a list of transferable courses, and if they are a match for UMR transfer.

General Education:

Core requirements for all students, regardless of major.

Major, Minor or Prerequisite Requirements:

Courses that fulfill a requirement for your declared major or minor.

Equivalent Course:

A course from another institution that has been approved as a direct match to a course at UMR. Transfer courses that are equivalent to a course required for your major or minor are applied to your degree upon review of an official transcript.

Prospective and Admitted Students

For students who are considering a transfer to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, or have applied to UMR, but not received an admission decision, use Transferology to learn if a course has already been reviewed for transfer. New courses are added weekly as they are reviewed. See Review Your Transfer Coursework Guide for step-by-step instructions.

Current Students (with completed or planned transfer coursework)

Step 1: Submit transcripts of your completed coursework to the Office of Admissions. Students should order an official transcript to be sent for completed coursework. All planned/ not yet completed coursework can be submitted using unofficial transcripts.
Transcripts usually take 7-10 days to be processed. 

Step 2: Once the transcript is processed, review your APAS report in your MyU Academic Portal.

  • If the APAS report lists an exact course number, an equivalency has been established. Do not submit that course for review.
  • If the APAS does not use an exact course number, but you feel a course is a good match to a University of Minnesota course ("equivalent course") or could serve as a prerequisite or elective for your major, continue to Step 3.

Step 3: Submit a Course for Review.
Email an electronic version of the course syllabus needed for review to [email protected]. In this email, please include:

  • Name
  • Student ID
  • Institution which offered the course

Failure to submit a syllabus greatly reduces the chance that the course will be granted an equivalency or substitution.

You should receive an email response to your request within four weeks of submission. If you have questions about the outcome or you have unique circumstances, contact your student success coach.

Note: International coursework is not currently displayed or reviewed in Transferology. Visit the Learning Abroad Center's Academic Planning webpage to use the U Credit Abroad Search tool to help identify international coursework that will transfer.

How courses are evaluated

Office of Admissions

Evaluates transfer courses to determine if they transfer to UMR based on the following criteria:

  • Whether the institution is regionally accredited
  • The mission of the institution (credit is not normally transferred from specialized or proprietary institutions, military schools or industry-based education programs)
  • The comparability of the coursework with UMR coursework
  • The appropriateness of the coursework for meeting baccalaureate degree requirements

Curriculum Committee

Evaluates transfer courses to determine if:

  • Courses meet any of the General Education (LE) requirements
  • Courses will be accepted as a substitute course for a program requirement category (e.g. an Upper Division Course requirement)

Area Faculty

Evaluate transfer courses to determine if:

  • Courses are a direct match with a UMR course (an equivalent course)
  • Courses will be accepted as a substitute for a required course in a program

International Courses

International coursework is not currently displayed in Transferology or reviewed using the steps on this webpage. The Evaluation Company or International Education Evaluations are UMR’s recommended international transcript evaluation services, offering a custom evaluation at a discounted rate. Translation services can be added for additional cost.
